Technical Arts MinistryOur goal at Woodland is to leverage available technology and media to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ with relevance, and excellence. Our volunteers see this challenge as an opportunity to express their gifts and talents each and every week. Woodland’s Worship Center requires a large volunteer team to create our weekend worship experience. We are always looking for volunteers with a servant’s heart, and a desire to share their talents and creativity. See below for a sample of the positions that are available, and contact Carla if you are interested in serving in any of these areas.
Video Opportunities…Computer Graphics OperatorThis is an extremely important job. The graphics operator provides lyric support during worship, sermon notes during the message, as well as other computer generated content for use during the service. The operator works with an iMac computer, running ProPresenter, and PowerPoint. Camera OperatorThis is an important role, and requires a steady hand, and a good eye. Running a camera is definitely a lot of fun, and is a great place to begin volunteering, as it can be taught in a short amount of time. Two camera operators are required for each of our weekend services. Camera operators provide Image Magnification (IMAG) during our weekend experience. This allows everyone in the worship center to see and interact with what is happening on stage. Camera operators work with the Video Directors to create an engaging visual experience. Their camera work is also used to create our weekly web download of the sermon, as well as the live web stream. There are also opportunities to do field work, filming testimonies, and other “packaged” videos that will be used in the services. These videos include testimonies, countdowns, and other special video pieces. Video DirectorThis is a critical role, and one that requires some past experience, or a good bit of training; as well as strong leadership and communication skills. The Video director is responsible for all video content on the screens. The VD coordinates with other video volunteers including Switching, Cameras, and Lyrics. The VD calls the camera shots, and sets the pace for the switching. The VD is also responsible for recording the services for use on the web, and other venues. Video SwitcherThe Video Switcher operates the video system, including several switchers, routers, and the matrix, sending feeds to different video outputs throughout the campus. The primary responsibility of the Video Switcher is to mix cameras, lyrics, and other inputs when cued by the Video Director. This is a fun position, and one that allows you to work with a wide range of gear. Equipment includes a range of Analog Way, and Extron pieces. Video EditorWoodland uses Mac computers running Final Cut Studio to prepare and edit custom video content used in the services. There are opportunities to help with these projects for those with prior experience with the software. For those interested in learning, training is available if you would like to learn video editing. Lighting Opportunities…Lighting DirectorThe lighting director uses the theatrical fixtures, moving instruments, and house lights to paint the mood during our weekend experiences. This role requires a “theatrical eye” and a good sense of timing. Our theatrical fixtures are provided by ETC; our moving heads are Martin Mac 250’s; and our console is an ETC Congo Jr.
Audio Opportunities… Audio Engineer Sound is an important part of nearly every event at Woodland. The mix for the weekend experience is created by staff technicians, or volunteers with prior experience and training. Training is available to those interested in learning, however the training is extensive. Woodland has several venues available to those who are learning. These venues include the ROC, CHASM, and Forum. These venues host a variety of meetings, conferences, and other events, and each requires a volunteer capable of mixing sound with an analog console. Sound in the New Worship Center is mixed using a Yamaha M7CL, a digital 48 channel console, with Renkus Heinz and OAP speakers and subs. Audio AssistantThe Audio Assistant works at Front of House (FOH) with the audio engineer. The FOH Asst works with the engineer in developing a mix; keeps track of volume using a dB meter. One of the FOH Assistant’s critical jobs is communication. The Asst wears the intercom headset, and communicates to the video suite, and to backstage during services and other events. The FOH Asst is often interested in learning to mix audio, and is in training. Working with the engineer affords them the opportunity to be at the console and ask questions during a service or production. Backstage Opportunities…Stage ManagerThe Stage Manager works backstage, communicating on the intercom; coordinating microphones, operating the curtain; and coordinating traffic on stage. This is not a technically complicated role, so it can be trained quickly. The SM does need to have good leadership, and strong communication skills, as they will be working with a great many people backstage, including the band, praise team, choir, orchestra, teaching pastors, and other guests. Stage HandStage hands assist the Stage Manager during a production or weekend service. Often moving props, set pieces, coordinating all the people, and working the curtain require an extra person or two so that the services can flow smoothly. This is an excellent position for those already involved in the Worship Arts Ministry; and can also be a good entry point into the team, as it can be trained quickly.
